About this blog

“To have another language is to possess another soul”

Charlemagne

Why write a blog about language learning? First, I have been passionate about languages my entire life and have devoted my professional career to educating people about the most effective ways of acquiring another language. In this blog, I want to share some of those insights and offer some advice based on the research that has been done in the field of applied linguistics. Second, in today’s global world, the importance of knowing another language is ever more crucial. It is misguided to think that speaking English alone is sufficient because the whole world will understand. There are approximately 7000 languages in the world, and each culture shows us different ways of seeing the world and brings new perspectives on how we experience life. Learning a second (or third or fourth. . .) language can connect you to new professional opportunities, reconnect you with your heritage, and deepen your engagement with friends, neighbors, and co-workers.

I also want to share my personal experiences in learning a new language and encountering a new culture. Living in an unfamiliar culture can be exciting and exhilarating but can also sometimes be confusing and frustrating. As I stumble through learning French again, I invite you to join me on this journey with all its ups and downs.
